Moravian Academy is proud to announce an exciting new opportunity for our students. Beginning with the Class of 2027, learners will now be eligible to graduate with the Pennsylvania Seal of Biliteracy (PASB). This prestigious distinction recognizes students who demonstrate intermediate high proficiency in English and in at least one additional language, Spanish, French, or Mandarin Chinese, studied through our Global Languages Department.
Celebrating Linguistic and Cultural Excellence
The PASB represents more than a language credential. It affirms Moravian Academy’s dedication to fostering globally competent citizens. By encouraging students to develop advanced skills in both English and world languages, we provide universities and future employers with a meaningful indicator of biliteracy, an increasingly valuable asset in a globally interconnected world.
This initiative also strengthens our commitment to cultural and linguistic diversity on campus. It celebrates the richness of multilingualism, supports the growth of dual-language and world-language programs, and reinforces our belief that communication across cultures is essential to building inclusive communities.
Requirements for Earning the Pennsylvania Seal of Biliteracy
To graduate with the PASB, students must demonstrate strong academic performance and language proficiency through the following requirements:
1. Satisfy all Moravian Academy diploma requirements.
2. Demonstrate proficiency in English:
Maintain an average final grade of 80 percent or higher in all English Language Arts courses from grades 9 through 12.
Present a portfolio, established by Moravian Academy’s Seal of Biliteracy committee, that demonstrates intermediate-high or higher proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
3. Demonstrate proficiency in a world language:
Maintain an average final grade of 80 percent or higher in all Global Languages courses in Spanish, French, or Mandarin Chinese from grades 8 through 12.
Earn an Intermediate High (I-5) rating on the Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL), administered by Moravian Academy.
Students who successfully meet these expectations will be awarded the PASB at graduation.
Planning Ahead: How Students Can Pursue the Seal
Each spring, during the annual course selection process, Grade Deans and College Counselors will guide students in grades 9 through 11 to consider the PASB as part of their academic planning. Interested students may apply to the Chair of the Global Languages Department at any point during this process.
A Pathway to Global Citizenship
Offering the Pennsylvania Seal of Biliteracy reflects Moravian Academy’s mission to nurture thoughtful, inclusive, and globally minded learners. By supporting students in their pursuit of multilingual proficiency, we help them build skills that open doors academically, professionally, and personally.
