Learning from the Heart: HDC Campus Students Connect Science and Compassion
We were delighted to welcome Dr. Stevens, a cardiologist and MA parent, for an engaging and informative presentation on the human heart. Stevens brought his expertise to life as he guided students through the fascinating mechanics of how the heart works and the importance of keeping it healthy. He explained how doctors measure a healthy heart and shared insights into the specialized field of cardiac electrophysiology.
Students were captivated as Dr. Stevens connected his work to cutting-edge technology, including the role of robotics in modern cardiology. His presentation perfectly complemented both our 3rd grade science unit on the circulatory system and our 4th grade ELA unit, "A Great Heart."
The timing of Dr. Stevens's visit was particularly meaningful as it bridges the literal and figurative meanings of the heart, a central theme in our classrooms right now. While 3rd graders deepened their understanding of this vital organ and its function, 4th graders explored how the heart symbolizes courage, kindness, and love through the Wit & Wisdom curriculum. Dr. Stevens's presentation reminded all our students that the heart is not only a remarkable biological system that sustains our lives, but also a powerful symbol of the compassion and determination we carry within ourselves.
Thank you, Dr. Stevens, for sharing your passion for cardiology and inspiring our students to care for both their physical and emotional hearts!
