Upper School Anatomy & Physiology Students Engage in Advanced Medical Study

Upper School Anatomy & Physiology students recently stepped beyond the textbook and into the world of clinical medicine through a remarkable hands-on learning experience. By working directly with medical professionals and advanced surgical technology, students deepened their understanding of human anatomy in ways few high school programs offer.

This opportunity was made possible through Moravian Academy’s valued relationship with St. Luke’s Sports Medicine, who not only partner with us on academic experiences but also provide comprehensive medical care for our student-athletes across all campuses.

Students conducted a human dissection focused on the anatomy of the knee joint, gaining a rare, firsthand perspective on the complexity of the human body and enhancing their classroom learning with practical experience.

Dr. Gregory Carolan, an orthopedic sports medicine physician with St. Luke’s and a Moravian Academy parent, led the dissection. He guided students through the structures and functions of the knee’s ligaments, tendons, muscles, and bones, providing expert insights that enhanced their academic study of human physiology. Several students actively assisted in the dissection, further elevating the hands-on nature of the experience and allowing them to engage directly with the material under professional guidance.

Dr. Maheep Vikram, a St. Luke’s sports medicine physician and Moravian Academy parent, delivered a comprehensive overview of the knee’s anatomy and its role within the musculoskeletal system. His clinical perspective helped students connect theoretical knowledge to practical application.

Students also engaged with an arthroscopic surgery simulation station provided by Arthrex, a leader in surgical technology. This advanced simulation introduced students to contemporary surgical techniques, offering an interactive extension of their anatomical studies and a valuable connection to modern medical practice.

This culminating academic experience integrated clinical expertise, hands-on discovery, and cutting-edge technology. Through opportunities like this, Moravian Academy empowers students to think critically, cultivate intellectual curiosity, and pursue academic excellence within and beyond the classroom.
