Student Reflections on Community Service Opportunities - Moravian Village
Nick Lucas
Community service is a core value of the Moravians, reflecting their deep commitment to communal living, mutual aid, and service to others as central tenets of their Christian faith. In keeping with this tradition—and in recognition of our school’s historical roots—community service remains an integral part of the middle school experience at the Historic Downtown Campus. Each month, a group of mixed-grade students from 6th through 8th grade visits Moravian Village, Bethlehem. During this dedicated community period, students have the opportunity to build meaningful connections and friendships with the senior residents. The residents eagerly anticipate these visits, often gathering in the common room with great enthusiasm. These intergenerational relationships leave a lasting, positive impact on both our students and the residents of Moravian Village. The significance of these experiences is best expressed through the reflections of the students themselves.

I have had such an amazing experience doing this community service. I have thoroughly enjoyed playing Uno and talking with the residents, and I really wish that we could have done it more often. It is such a meaningful part of the school day as it shows how students can positively impact the local community with just a small bit of effort.

I had such a great time talking and hanging out with the residents. Not only was it fun to listen to some of their stories, but it was so fun to play games with them, such as Uno. Although I wish we could have gone more often, I am so grateful we got to go at all. I truly hope that we made the residents happy and that we made a positive impact on the community.

I thought it was an amazing experience to play card games and hang out with the residents. It was the best teaching them how to play Uno and hearing their stories.

It was a fun experience, playing card games and talking about life with the seniors. We got to connect, talk about school, and give them something new. I hope that I gave them joy and had a positive impact on them.
