Swain Campus Students Bring Imagination to Life in Engineering and Design

During the first trimester, Swain Campus students in Mr. Sauers’ Engineering and Design classes engaged in hands-on projects that combined curiosity, creativity, and practical problem-solving. Each grade approached challenges with collaboration and thoughtful problem-solving, creating projects that were both thoughtful and full of creativity.

Seventh Grade
The seventh grade students have had a busy and productive trimester in Engineering and Design class. Working with a wide range of tools, they researched, designed and constructed a tabletop game of their choosing. The games could be full scale or miniature and had to include some type of element in motion. It was great to watch them problem-solve and adjust their designs. The class demonstrated creativity, teamwork and the use of practical math. I look forward to working with this group in the future!

Fourth Grade
Our fourth grade students had an excellent trimester in Engineering and Design class. They have learned a variety of measuring, carpentry and shop safety skills that will prepare them to work and grow in our Makerspace. Each student participated in designing and constructing an “Oregon Trail'' wagon/cart in their small group. Teamwork and compromise were also essential concepts that were taught and implemented while students worked together to make some awesome projects!

Second Grade
Our second grade designers are well on their way to hitting the hills with their homemade snow sleds! After weeks of brainstorming, learning about working as a collaborative group and considering the physics involved with friction, our students have constructed their creations with great success. Using a variety of materials, each group of students worked hard to figure out the best combinations of materials for a fully functional sled. With the sleds completed, all we need is a little snow, and we will be testing these awesome projects!

The first trimester in Engineering and Design has been full of curiosity, creativity, and hands-on problem-solving. Across every grade, students approached challenges with thoughtfulness and collaboration, producing projects that are inventive, purposeful, and distinctly their own.
