Fifth Grade Explores History at the National Civil War Museum

Jackie Andreychak, Amanda Bellucci, Heather Jenkins & Sandra Soto
Fifth grade students recently visited the National Civil War Museum, deepening their understanding of this pivotal period in American history. The trip provided a meaningful connection to their current social studies unit on the Civil War and their ELA Wit & Wisdom unit, A War Between Us.

The day began with an engaging presentation on the daily life of a Civil War soldier, including the gear they carried. Students then participated in a scavenger hunt that guided them through galleries covering the causes of the war, the transatlantic slave trade, the outbreak of conflict, major battles, life in Civil War camps, and the assassination of President Lincoln.

Among the highlights for students were the realistic portrayals of camp life, the opportunity to view authentic artifacts, and a powerful film about President Lincoln—bringing their classroom learning to life in memorable ways.
