From Seeds to Stars: Preschoolers Discover the World Through Apples

Stacey Raudabaugh and Lisa Campbell
This fall, preschool students at Moravian Academy participated in an extended investigation of apples that integrated science, mathematics, language, sensory learning, and motor development.

The study began with a science experiment on buoyancy. Students predicted whether apples would sink or float, tested their ideas, and discussed why apples stay on the surface of water. This activity introduced them to hypothesis-making, observation, and evidence-based reasoning.

Next, students conducted a taste test, sampling red, green, and yellow apples. They described flavor and texture with vocabulary such as sweet, sour, crunchy, and juicy. The class then graphed their preferences, using counting and comparison to analyze results. This transformed a sensory activity into a math and data exercise.

Cutting apples crosswise revealed the star shape at the core. Students counted seeds, noticed symmetry, and discussed natural patterns. They also studied the life cycle of an apple, from seed to tree, blossom to fruit, and learned about the role of bees in pollination, linking the classroom investigation to larger ecological systems.

Fine motor skills were developed through hands-on play, such as washing apples in soapy water and using tongs to retrieve them. These activities combined coordination practice with opportunities for descriptive language.

The unit concluded with a cooking project. Students washed, chopped, and stirred apples to make applesauce, observing the transformation of ingredients while practicing sequencing and teamwork.

Through this integrated study, preschoolers engaged in scientific inquiry, mathematical reasoning, data representation, ecological learning, language development, and motor practice. The apple investigation demonstrates how one familiar object can become a foundation for multidisciplinary learning in early childhood.
