Professional Artist Karen Mattice Shares Expertise with MSC Ceramics Students

Professional potter and teacher Karen Mattice returned to the 3D studio to share her expertise with Ceramics students through a demonstration of throwing on the wheel. Ceramics students are currently in their Wheel Throwing unit and asked thoughtful questions as Karen created a variety of vessels, explaining the process for each and showing the results by cutting a piece in half to describe the structure of a solidly thrown vessel.

Originally from the Catskills, NY and now residing in Pennsylvania, Karen began her pottery journey in 1981 after discovering her love for clay in high school. After earning a degree in art and education, she eventually established her own studio, where she creates and sells pottery at shows and fairs in Pennsylvania and New York, while also teaching students ranging in age from 6 to 76.

The goal of her visit was for Moravian Academy students to benefit not only from the curriculum here, but also from observing and interacting with other methods and approaches within their discipline. Students can then add these new methods to their “toolbox” to strengthen their skills and apply them while creating work based on their own ideas.

We thank Karen Mattice for taking the time to share her knowledge and passion with our students.
