Merle-Smith Campus Students Compete in the American Mathematics Competition

Fifteen Moravian Academy students put their problem-solving skills to the test in the American Mathematics Competition, a challenging annual event hosted by the Mathematical Association of America. With over 300,000 students from 50 states and 30 countries participating, the AMC encourages mathematical exploration and serves as the first step toward prestigious competitions such as the USA International Mathematical Olympiad.

The AMC 10, designed for ninth and tenth graders, and the AMC 12, for eleventh and twelfth graders, feature 25 multiple-choice questions completed in 75 minutes, covering high school-level mathematics. The AMC 10 focuses on algebra, basic geometry, number theory, and probability, while the AMC 12 adds trigonometry, advanced algebra, and advanced geometry. Students tackle creative, “out-of-the-box” problems that build on classroom skills and deepen mathematical thinking.

Sophia Chen earned first place for the AMC 10, with Ayush Jain in second place and Rayn Jaffer and Claire Liu tying for third. For the AMC 12, Danial Siddiqui took first place, followed by Shaan Ailawadi in second.
