Swain Campus 5th Graders Explore Colonial America Through Inquiry-Based Learning

In Dr. Kish' Social Studies class, 5th graders explored the European settlement of North America through the first Inquiry in the InquirEd curriculum, examining the causes of migration and the consequences of cultural contact and collision. Students studied how geography shaped the colonies’ regional identities and economies, including the development of trade networks and the rise of slavery, through reading, art analysis, discussions, and hexagonal mapping, a hands-on activity that helps make connections across topics.

To showcase their learning, students worked in groups of three to four to create historical exhibits that highlight different aspects of colonial history. Each exhibit was designed to educate younger students about what they learned, demonstrating careful research, collaboration, and creativity.
