Black History Month: Reflection, Celebration, and Community at the Swain Campus

Heather Manning
The Swain Campus recently gathered for a meaningful Black History Month celebration centered on this year’s theme: A Century of Black History Commemorations.

Our Beginning School students kicked off the festivities by learning about Dr. Carter G. Woodson, the "Father of Black History." The morning continued with a high-energy musical session led by Saide Saddiq and Chris Kusi, where students experienced the joy of rhythm through dancing, singing, and drumming.

Students in grades 1-8 participated in a powerful town meeting featuring choreopoems written by Latrice Young. Students Jermahl Stewart, Ethan Brown, Bella Covington, and Brianna Harding embodied historical and contemporary Black voices, challenging the audience to reflect and act. Students were reminded that "Black History is American History... and if you keep studying, you’ll find it is also world history." The presentation served as an important reminder that history is not just something we study, but something we continue to create.

All students, faculty, and staff enjoyed delicious food samplings at lunch, including macaroni and cheese, cabbage, cornbread, chicken, sweet potato pie, and more.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Janicca Covington for her careful coordination of this event. Special thanks also go to our wonderful contributors: Skye Henry, Christal Harding, Robin Sundaramoorthy, Natasha Charles, Helen Mohammed, Carolyn Frank, Kenice Frank, Glowdein Ambrose-John, Jason Vanderburg, Ca Misha Stewart, Jermahl Stewart, Alicia Bernard, and Clayvi Rodriguez.

As we honor a century of commemorations, we remain committed to learning and reflection all year long.
