Maddie Yang ’27 Named Regional Recipient of the Princeton Prize in Race Relations

Maddie Yang ’27 has been named the Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware regional recipient of the Princeton Prize in Race Relations, a distinction awarded to high school students who demonstrate leadership in advancing racial equity or promoting racial understanding in their schools and communities.

Selected from hundreds of applicants, Maddie will join 30 students from across the country for a two-day symposium at Princeton University. As part of the honor, she will receive a $2,500 award and an all expenses paid trip to campus, where she will collaborate with fellow student leaders, present her project to Princeton University students, alumni, and fellow winners, and attend fascinating workshops and break-out sessions.

This prestigious award recognizes Maddie’s work at East 40 Gardens, where she created a Lenape Storywalk under the mentorship of Lenape Clan Mother Shelley DePaul to increase awareness of Lenape history and Indigenous ethnobotany.

In addition, the Princeton Prize acknowledges Maddie’s leadership through the organization Food to Flourish. Its seed library initiative partners with libraries across the United States and Canada to establish community seed libraries. The initiative addresses food insecurity and food deserts, challenges that disproportionately affect minority communities, by expanding access to fresh food and promoting sustainable growing practices.

Congratulations to Maddie on this distinguished honor. Her selection places her among a national cohort of students advancing racial understanding and equity in their communities.
