MAX: Spring 2024

Important Details


  • Courses will begin the week of April 1, 2024.
  • Course offerings will run weekly for 6 sessions. Class instructors will notify families of any changes to the schedule caused by holidays, weather, etc. 
  • Course sessions will be 1 hour long, 3:15 to 4:15 PM (unless otherwise noted).

Courses at the Historic Downtown Campus

Imagination in Ink!
Students will have the opportunity to practice journaling as a means of notetaking, sketching in a “draw your day” style, or writing in a way that makes meaning for them! Activities include prompts, writing games, and group discussions, promoting literacy skills and emotional intelligence. We plan to spend time writing and sketching outdoors as often as possible!

Creativity Corner
If you have the creativity bug this program is for you! This is your opportunity to use our art room materials to create those original projects you’ve been dreaming of. Each week students will be offered inspiration and guidance to help them bring their creative ideas to life.

SPORTS!
In the "SPORTS!" program, we will be playing a different sport or activity each week. The sports include soccer, handball, volleyball, basketball, etc. We will be practicing the skills and strategies of the games and activities while also working on sportsmanship. I hope you can join us!

3D Printing
Join Mr. Pomeroy and explore the world of 3D printing. We will learn how to design objects using software and print them using our school's new Prusa MK3+. Have fun creating virtually and watching your creations come to life!

Story and Movement
Students will enjoy hearing a seasonal story that relates to a specific theme. Afterwards, we will engage in movements in the classroom that relate to the story and theme. Come join us for yoga, dance moves, and stretches!

Trivia Time!
Students will engage in educational gameplay that fosters teamwork, critical thinking, and a love for learning through friendly trivia competitions.

Puppet Party
Join us for an adventure in puppetry! Learn to create a variety of different puppets and put on fun performances with you fellow puppet making artists! We hope you can join us for this exciting program!

Geocaching
Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to use GPS technology and latitude/longitude coordinates to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors. Participants will learn how to use Garmin eTrex H GPS devices to find and hide our own “treasures” in and around the Lower School campus. Additionally, students will become familiar with our Earth’s coordinate system, Google Earth (website), and the geocaching.com website. Geocaching is exciting and addicting. It’s a great way to get outdoors and explore!

Squirreling Around
Join the fun with our favorite fluffy tailed friends as we create artwork and much more in collaboration with the squirrels that share our campus. This enrichment program combines elements of art, science, and technology to achieve a better understanding of and relationship with the world around us.

Melty Beads
In Melty Beads, students use their fine motor skills and imagination to make one-of-a-kind creations. Mrs. Stitt teaches them the technique of putting small plastic beads on a tray and then she uses an iron to melt the beads together. Most students take home at least one unique creation each class, while others choose to take on bigger projects that span multiple sessions. Either way, students are sure to use their time for meaningful creative expression!

Imaginary Gardens: American Poetry and Art for Young People
Based on the text, IMAGINARY GARDENS edited by Charles Sullivan, students will be introduced to various poets, artists, and poetic forms. Young readers and writers will make their own discoveries and select their favorite works. We'll do some reading, some writing, and some creating. Bring your creative side and be prepared to be enriched by poetry and art!

The Not-So-Tortured Poets of Swain Campus
Calling all Swifties, creatively-minded people, and those visited by the muses! We will take our creativity to the MAX by writing original works, including poems, lyrics, and short fiction. We will explore famous examples, mimic techniques used by the greats, and publish manuscripts of our writing before the end of this era of creative exploration!

Swain Little Dribblers
