Moravian Academy Students Explore the Florida Keys Over Spring Break

Last week, Swain Campus 7th and 8th graders embarked on a spring break trip through the Florida Keys, trading classrooms for coral reefs and mangrove trails.

The trip began in Key Largo, where students volunteered at a wild bird sanctuary. They learned how injured birds of prey are rehabilitated and returned to the wild, gaining a firsthand look at the work behind wildlife care.
From there, the group visited Dolphins Plus, a bottlenose dolphin research center. Students observed animal training and veterinary care and had the opportunity to swim with the dolphins.

Students also paddled through saltwater mangrove ecosystems, exploring the diverse life within the tangled roots, including fish, crocodiles, crabs, jellyfish, and a variety of bird species.

The trip continued south through the Keys to Key West, the southernmost point in the contiguous United States. There, students visited a sea turtle hospital, snorkeled over a coral reef from a catamaran, and continued their exploration of the region’s natural environments.

It was a week filled with learning, adventure, and genuine connection to the natural world. We are so proud of our students and grateful for every moment we got to share with them on this trip.
