Swain Campus Middle Schoolers Spend Three Days Exploring the Sassafras River

As part of the Outdoor Education Program, Swain Campus Middle School students spent three days and two nights along the Sassafras River, a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay, kayaking, fishing, hiking, and swimming their way along the water before camping on its banks each night.

Highlights of the trip included a kayak journey to a hidden bamboo forest and beach for a swim, and a paddle into a quiet river inlet, where students let the tide carry them along as they fished and swam. Students also took a walking tour through the historic streets of Chestertown, Maryland, adding a dose of local history to the adventure. As night fell, they set out on flashlight-free night hikes, learning to navigate using only their senses.

Three days on the water. Time spent exploring, connecting, and camping under the stars, all part of an unforgettable outdoor education experience.
