The Vision

Sport as a pathway for growth

Athletics at Moravian Academy is about more than competition. It is where students learn to persevere, to lead, and to show up for one another. Over the next three years, we are intentionally expanding and aligning our programs across campuses so that every student has a place in this community.
Invested in Signature Sports
Dedicated coaching and developmental pathways in Soccer, Field Hockey, Cross Country, Basketball, and Lacrosse — from middle school through Upper School.
One Community Across Campuses
Combining Swain and Historic Downtown rosters creates stronger teams and deeper connections — students who compete together become part of something larger than either campus alone.
Beginning Earlier
New programming for Grades 5 and 6 gives younger students their first structured athletic experiences within the Moravian Academy community.
Access for Every Family
Transportation between campuses is arranged so that participation is never limited by where a student lives or which campus they attend.
Signature Sports

Five programs. Three seasons. One continuous pathway.

Our Signature Sports receive focused investment in coaching, facilities, and developmental structure — with intentional alignment from the earliest grades through Upper School so that every year of participation builds on the last.

Questions we hear most often

We welcome every question. If you don't find what you're looking for here, please reach out directly to the Office of Athletics.

List of 5 items.

  • Can my 6th grader join a grade 7-8 team?

PIAA game participation begins in 7th grade, 6th graders may practice with combined 7th–8th grade teams. The lacrosse teams do not participate in PIAA in Middle School, so students in Grade 6 can play lacrosse games.
  • What is MAX Sports?

MAX Sports is our participation-focused programming for students who want to be active and part of our athletic community without the structure of a competitive team. Offerings include co-ed Soccer, Archery, Flag Football, Yoga, Cross Training, and Dance.
  • What will the grade 5-6 soccer program cost?

A participation fee will cover coaching, transportation, league entry, officials, and related expenses. This is not a revenue program; it is designed to make participation possible and accessible. Specific fee amounts will be shared with families before registration opens in August.
  • Why is Moravian Academy making these changes?

We believe that sport is more than competition. It is where students discover resilience, learn to lead, and build the kind of trust in themselves and in each other that lasts far beyond the final whistle. Our athletic programs exist to nurture that growth — and we are committed to giving every student the opportunity to experience it.

We believe expanding Middle School athletics will strengthen our community and open new doors for students across both campuses. Combining Swain and Historic Downtown Campus rosters will create more competitive and connected teams. We are launching a new co-ed soccer program for students in Grades 5 and 6 and broadening our MAX Sports offerings so that every student, regardless of experience or interest in competitive play, has a meaningful place in our athletic life.

This is the first phase of a three-year journey. Our goal is a fully integrated Preschool – Grade 12 athletic experience, one where a student’s connection to Moravian Academy athletics begins early, grows steadily, and carries them with confidence into Upper School and beyond.
  • Will my child have to travel between campuses?

In 2026-27, the Grades 7-8 combined teams of Field Hockey, Boys & Girls Soccer, Lacrosse, and Baseball will practice at the Merle-Smith Campus. The Grades 5-6 co-ed MAX Soccer program will practice at the Swain Campus. Transportation will be arranged between campuses so that travel does not become a barrier to participation. Specific shuttle times and logistics will be confirmed and shared with families before the seasons begin.

We welcome your questions.

Our Athletic Director is glad to speak with any family about programs, registration, or what to expect in 2026–27.
