Comenius Scholar Highlight: Lily Razavi '27

The Comenius Independent Study Program offers Merle-Smith Campus sophomores, juniors, and seniors the opportunity to pursue their interests through self-directed research and creative work, showcasing critical thinking, curiosity, and a passion for learning within the Moravian Academy community.

In her Comenius Project, Lily Razavi '27 explored the environmental justice and policy implications of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy, one of the most devastating industrial disasters in history. Through extensive research, she examined the ongoing environmental, socioeconomic, and public health effects of the disaster and the challenges communities continue to face in its aftermath.

Her work investigated gaps in corporate accountability and human rights standards that enabled these effects while exploring the broader implications of environmental justice. Through this analysis, she examined how the legacy of the disaster continues to shape discussions surrounding responsibility, human rights, and environmental protection.

Throughout the project, Lily studied environmental law in both the United States and around the world, gaining a deeper understanding of the legal frameworks that influence environmental policy and regulation. She also considered how lessons from the Bhopal Gas Tragedy can inform decision-making and policy development today.
