Comenius Scholar Highlight: Gavin Qian '27

The Comenius Independent Study Program offers Merle-Smith Campus sophomores, juniors, and seniors the opportunity to pursue their interests through self-directed research and creative work, showcasing critical thinking, curiosity, and a passion for learning within the Moravian Academy community.

In his Comenius Project, Gavin Qian '27 explored the impact of sonic environments on mental health, wellbeing, and attention, investigating how sound influences people's daily experiences and how intentional design can shape public spaces. Through extensive research, he examined the effects of noise pollution and natural sound exposure on stress, focus, and overall health.

Drawing on studies in psychology, public health, and urban design, he investigated how different types of sound affect people and explored whether the benefits of natural sounds stem from their acoustic qualities, their association with nature, or a combination of both.

As part of his project, he created an interactive sound map of the Merle-Smith Campus that highlights sources of both human-made and natural sound. Through audio recordings and environmental analysis, he also examined strategies that could help reduce noise pollution and improve the campus soundscape.

Through thoughtful research and analysis, Gavin's project offers insight into an often-overlooked aspect of the built environment and encourages greater awareness of how sound shapes everyday experiences.
