Comenius Scholar Highlight: Maryn Guroff '28

The Comenius Independent Study Program offers Merle-Smith Campus sophomores, juniors, and seniors the opportunity to pursue their interests through self-directed research and creative work, showcasing critical thinking, curiosity, and a passion for learning within the Moravian Academy community.

In her Comenius Project, “Making a Graphic Novel: Storytelling through the Art of Comics,” Maryn Guroff '28 explored the creative process behind developing a graphic novel through both artistic practice and storytelling. Over the course of the school year, this project investigated the many stages involved in comic creation, including storyboarding, sketching, inking, and coloring.

Through this hands-on process, Maryn gained a deeper understanding of the time, creativity, and attention to detail required to bring a comic to life. Her project also highlighted the importance of personal passion in creative work, as the experience felt both engaging and natural throughout the year. Reflecting on the project, Maryn shared that one of the most surprising aspects was how consistently motivated she felt while working on something she genuinely enjoyed.

By combining visual art and narrative storytelling, Maryn's project demonstrated how comics can serve as a powerful creative medium that blends imagination, structure, and artistic expression. Her work reflects the curiosity, dedication, and creativity fostered through the Comenius Independent Study Program.
