Moravian Academy Students Travel to the Azores for Immersive Global Learning Experience

Danielle Koren
This July, eighteen Moravian Academy students and three chaperones traveled to the Sao Miguel Island in the Azores, an archipelago of nine volcanic islands 700 miles off the coast of Portugal. Immersed in abundant natural beauty, students hiked a volcanic crater, learned Azorean farming practices and history, met with local experts to learn about the unique marine ecosystem of the island and ate lunch at a restaurant where their lunch was prepared using only geothermal energy! The trip was filled with hands-on activities led by experts in their field and even included an afternoon at the local university to explore water samples collected on the group’s whale watching adventure.

Students had the opportunity to explore the capital city of Ponta Delgada with friends in their free time and absorbed Portuguese culture by trying traditional Azorean foods, conversing with locals and navigating their way through a small European city. This unforgettable adventure forged strong peer connections and collaboration and was an impactful learning and growing experience.

Moravian Academy's Global Education Program empowers students to become curious, compassionate, and globally minded leaders by extending learning beyond the classroom and into the world. Through immersive travel and meaningful cultural experiences, students deepen their understanding of diverse perspectives, build lasting connections, and develop the confidence and empathy to make a positive impact in the world.
