Comenius Scholar Highlight: Damla Aksade '27

The Comenius Independent Study Program offers Merle-Smith Campus sophomores, juniors, and seniors the opportunity to pursue their interests through self-directed research and creative work, showcasing critical thinking, curiosity, and a passion for learning within the Moravian Academy community.

Damla Aksade ’27 explored the ethics of animal testing and the global beauty industry in her Comenius Project, When is Animal Testing Justified? Her work takes the form of a 30-page illustrated short story, soon to be published on Amazon, combining original writing and artwork to guide readers through a deeply researched examination of animal testing practices and the broader systems connected to the beauty industry.

Throughout the project, Damla investigates how animal testing is regulated across different regions, including evolving policies in the United Kingdom and the United States. Her research considers how these systems shape industry practices and raises questions about accountability and oversight within global cosmetic production.

Damla’s work also explores the environmental impact of the beauty industry, including raw material sourcing and its effects on ecosystems and wildlife. She examines the presence of chemicals such as PFAS and formaldehyde in everyday consumer products, connecting scientific research to real-world implications for human health and the environment.

In addition, Damla analyzes how the beauty industry intersects with broader social influences, including the reinforcement of beauty standards and their impact on mental health. Her project also highlights the treatment of lab animals, including rabbits, beagles, and monkeys, offering readers a closer look at the ethical considerations involved in scientific testing.

Damla weaves together research and illustration to create a narrative that is both informative and visually compelling, encouraging readers to think critically about the systems behind everyday products.
