Comenius Scholar Highlight: Maryam Janjua '27

The Comenius Independent Study Program offers Merle-Smith Campus sophomores, juniors, and seniors the opportunity to pursue their interests through self-directed research and creative work, showcasing critical thinking, curiosity, and a passion for learning within the Moravian Academy community.

In her Comenius Project, Same, Same, Different: How Different Regions Tell a Global Story, Maryam Janjua '27 explored her love for language and translated it into her interest in global events. Using news coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic from three different countries, she compared each nation's approach to reporting on the pandemic.

She also studied how language affects thought, examining the connection between the words we use and the way we understand the world around us. Through this research, she combined her interests in linguistics and foreign affairs while exploring how different regions tell a global story.

Reflecting on her experience, Maryam said, "Comenius was the lens through which my passion for linguistics and foreign affairs was magnified, and I hope it was just the beginning of a lifelong dedication to these fields."
