From Marshes to the Bay: 7th Grade Explores Coastal Ecosystems at Chincoteague Bay Field Station

Erin Coffey, Outdoor Education Coordinator
The 7th grade traveled to Chincoteague Bay Field Station on Wallops Island, Virginia, for a three-day field study experience focused on the region’s coastal ecosystems. Throughout the trip, students participated in hands-on courses covering coastal ecology, intertidal habitats, oceanography, marine invertebrates, and wetland ecosystems.

Students explored marshes, collected and analyzed data, examined local plant and animal species, and learned about the environmental factors that shape coastal habitats. An oceanography research cruise provided an opportunity to study the bay from the water, while field investigations allowed students to observe ecological concepts in action and connect classroom learning to real-world environments.

The trip also included time on Chincoteague Island and at the beach, giving students an opportunity to experience the area they were studying firsthand. Through a combination of fieldwork, observation, and exploration, students gained a deeper understanding of the ecosystems that make Virginia’s Eastern Shore a unique and important natural environment.
