Seniors will depart MSC in the morning to climb Hawk Mountain with their Grade Dean and advisors, and will return to campus around 2pm for reflections.
Hawk Mountain Sanctuary is an important example of societal change and looking outward, complementing the grade's theme of Societal & Global Impact. Founded in 1934 by pioneering conservationist, Rosalie Edge, Hawk Mountain Sanctuary was the world's first refuge for birds of prey. Did you know that in 1954 Rachel Carson visited the site to compile evidence that helped make the case about the threats associated with pesticides like DDT--connecting this local ridge to major changes in national policy & law.
Students will likely be able to observe both broad-winged hawks, red-tailed hawks, and have a chance of spotting golden eagles. A hawk watch is a practice in attention and the slowing down--both important at this stage of senior year.
