The Comenius Independent Study Program offers Merle-Smith Campus sophomores, juniors, and seniors the opportunity to pursue their interests through self-directed research and creative work, showcasing critical thinking, curiosity, and a passion for learning within the Moravian Academy community.
In his Comenius Project, Restoring a 1947 Jukebox, Axel LeRoy ’27 explored the engineering, design, and history behind one of the most iconic music machines of its era while restoring a 1947 Seeburg Trashcan, also known as the R2D2 Jukebox, to its original factory specifications.
Working with an original, untouched machine, Axel researched the jukebox’s remote selector and wall-box circuitry to better understand how the system functioned. Through the restoration process, he successfully repaired and restored the selector unit, main amplifier, cabinet wiring, and other electrical components, returning the machine to full working condition.
Using his research and technical skills, Axel carefully restored the jukebox while preserving its historical integrity. The project required extensive problem-solving, attention to detail, and a deep understanding of vintage electrical systems.
Through this project, Axel combined his interests in engineering, electronics, and restoration while bringing a piece of history back to life. His work highlights the value of preserving historical technology and demonstrates how hands-on learning can connect innovation, craftsmanship, and historical research.
