Comenius Project Highlight: Kathryn Carolan '28

The Comenius Independent Study Program offers Merle-Smith Campus sophomores, juniors, and seniors the opportunity to pursue their interests through self-directed research and creative work, showcasing critical thinking, curiosity, and a passion for learning within the Moravian Academy community.

In her Comenius Project, Kathryn Carolan '28 explored the environmental and social effects of French neocolonialism in Françafrique, a term used to describe the continuing political and economic relationships between France and several former African colonies. Through extensive research, her project examined the role of the CFA franc and how some scholars and critics argue the system has contributed to economic dependence and resource exploitation in parts of West Africa.

Her research focused specifically on the gold, cacao, and uranium industries, where she investigated issues including labor exploitation, child labor, and environmental pollution connected to resource extraction. By analyzing these industries, she explored how systems established during and after colonial rule continue to shape economic and social conditions today.

Throughout the project, Kathryn examined the broader concept of neocolonialism and its long-term effects on developing regions around the world. Her work highlights the complex relationship between global economics, political influence, and environmental sustainability, encouraging readers to think critically about how historical systems continue to impact communities today.

Through thoughtful research and analysis, Kathryn's project provides an insightful exploration of the lasting effects of colonial influence in West Africa and the challenges faced by nations navigating that legacy.
