8th Grade and Preschool Buddies Plant a Native Rainbow Garden

Megan Franzyshen
After reading the book Planting a Rainbow by Lois Ehlert, our 8th-grade and preschool buddies came together to create a vibrant native rainbow garden. Younger students read the book and the older students helped research native plants that could be planted in the order of a rainbow. Middle school students learned about many different perennials and how to select ones for that sunny, dry space. They then voted on their top picks of plants, which Mrs. Franzyshen used as a shopping list to purchase plants from a local nursery.

This hands-on project not only broadened students' understanding of native plants but also fostered collaboration across age groups. By planting a variety of native flowers, each chosen for its color and ecological benefits, the students gained a deeper appreciation for local biodiversity while creating a lasting, colorful reminder of their shared effort. This garden will continue to bloom for years to come, symbolizing both the beauty of nature and the power of community. The planting of this garden came at a time when we needed connection and the restorative effects of gardening the most, right after the passing of Ms. Barb. The garden will be lovingly named after her, as we hope to foster a love of nature, an understanding of responsibility, and continued opportunities for students to learn and connect across age groups for years to come.

Our team found such great joy seeing students elbow deep in the dirt, having fun and making our campus even more beautiful.
