Comenius Scholar Highlight: Kavi Perumal '27

The Comenius Independent Study Program offers Merle-Smith Campus sophomores, juniors, and seniors the opportunity to pursue their interests through self-directed research and creative work, showcasing critical thinking, curiosity, and a passion for learning within the Moravian Academy community.

In her Comenius Project, Kavi Perumal '27 explored the experiences of women within the American OBGYN healthcare system, examining factors that contribute to patient discomfort, inadequate communication, and lack of consent during medical care. Supported by research on patient treatment, her project investigated the challenges many women face when seeking reproductive and maternal healthcare.

Through a systematic review of academic literature and interviews with OBGYN physicians, midwives, patient support groups, and researchers, she examined the history and evolution of common procedures, medications, and medical equipment used in women's healthcare.

Throughout the project, she investigated ways the field can improve patient experiences, including the development of more comfortable and cost-effective medical tools. She also explored opportunities to raise awareness about the experiences of women navigating the healthcare system and to connect patients with educational resources and support networks.

Through thoughtful research and analysis, her project examines the historical and contemporary challenges women can face within the healthcare system while encouraging discussion about patient advocacy, informed consent, communication, and comfort in OBGYN care.
