Our school day begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 3:00 p.m. We follow an eight-day schedule named after John Amos Comenius, the 17th-century Moravian theologian who is the inspiration for many of our student-centered ideas. Each day in the cycle corresponds to a letter in the theologian’s last name C-O-M-E-N-I-U-S, so each school year starts with a “C” day and then follows an eight-day rotation. Cycle days match across divisions throughout the school year.
Beginning in Grade 1, students attend weekly chapel services that include hymns, prayers and student-led readings that value the central tenets of all faiths bringing our community together. Throughout the year, guest speakers from many different faiths are invited to present messages to students, usually focusing on character-building and the value of education. Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students attend Kinderchapel every other week and a modified version of our Chapel is presented.
Lunch is provided by Sodexo beginning in Grade 1 and most allergies and sensitivities can be accommodated.
One of our students’ favorite aspects of student life is our mentor/buddy program which offers a unique opportunity for older students to build relationships with younger students. Joint activities are planned throughout the year for Pre-K and Grade 7, Kindergarteners and Grade 5, and Grade 1 and Grade 12 students. These relationships allow for leadership qualities to blossom in our older students while also bringing a strong sense of community to our school.
We encourage Middle and Upper School students to continue exploring areas that pique their curiosity by joining one of the more than 50 clubs Moravian Academy offers. Time is provided at various times throughout the week for clubs to meet during the school day or students can choose to meet after 3:00 p.m. All of our clubs are student-driven, with a faculty advisor that offers guidance.
After the bell rings at 3:00 p.m., Middle and Upper School students have the opportunities to participate in sports, music groups, theatre productions, community service or after school clubs. Eighty percent of our student-body chooses to participate in a sports team or music group or theatre production.
Moravian Academy underlines the notion that a community that is fortunate can and must give back in time, spirit, and service. Every grade participates in community service at some level and our Upper School students are required to complete 40 hours of community service before the end of senior year in order to graduate.
