The Power of Performance

Music has always played a significant role in Moravian history and culture. This tradition is reflected in the music program at the Upper School, where a variety of formal and less formal opportunities are available to students wishing to explore their own musical inclinations and curiosities. Students can choose to take part in one of the three vocal ensembles, four instrumental ensembles, or two handbell choirs to fulfill their desire to perform with others.

Students wishing to delve deeper into a more formal study of music in a classroom setting may select academic coursework offered in music theory and composition, as well as music history.

Students have ample opportunities to perform on a regular basis at the Upper School. Major events include: the Coffeehouse variety show in November, Christmas Vespers service in December and the Spring Choral and Instrumental Concerts in May. The Red and Gold Recital in October presents serious music students with the chance to perform works from their private study to a friendly and supportive audience comprised of their peers, teachers, and the public. Weekly chapel services and regular school assemblies provide an opportunity for soloists and small ensembles as well as the larger school groups to perform throughout the year.

In addition to these more formal offerings, students often form groups that play together for recitals, open mic nights, and other school events. In the less formal realm, there are three or four Open Mic Nights a year where students demonstrate just how diverse our musical expressions can be.

Our students participate in a variety of music festivals in the region and beyond, including the Northampton County Chorus, District 10 PMEA Chorus and Orchestra, and regional and state festivals sponsored by the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association. Beyond that, several students have been selected for national-level orchestra and choral festivals in recent years.
