Making Music & Finding Your Voice

In the Lower School, Moravian Academy has the unique opportunity to enrich the lives of students in a holistic way through our music program, which emphasizes seven core elements: rhythm and beat, melody, tone quality, expression, form, tonality and harmony, and movement. This is achieved through singing, rhythmic experiences, music writing, creative movement, technology, use of classroom instruments, and listening to music samples. Students also gain exposure to ‘Orff’ instruments (xylophones, glockenspiels, and metallophones) and have the opportunity to learn a wind instrument in the fourth grade.

Performing is a big part of the music experience at the Lower School. All grades perform during our traditional Christmas Vespers service and have other opportunities to participate in recitals, formal concerts, and chapel services throughout the year and share their gifts and talents with family members and the community.

The String Instrumental Program

Students have the opportunity to take additional music lessons through our progressive ‘Suzuki Strings’ program beginning with introductory prekindergarten classes in violin and cello and continuing with lessons, ensembles, and performances for kindergarten and grades one through five.

The program is based on the philosophy that every child can achieve success and artistry through study and practice.  We integrate technology with traditional approaches and involve parents in lessons and practice.

Students gain a firsthand appreciation of music and acquire important life skills and abilities through the study of instrumental music.
