Experience the Wonders of the Outdoors

The Outdoor Education Program offers a way for students to experience the wonders and the challenges of the outdoors and outdoor activities. The program focuses on two main activities: hiking and whitewater boating. The hiking component involves afternoon outings twice a week and day hikes/backpacking on the weekends. The whitewater boating component involves paddling Class II-III rivers in a variety of watercraft (rafts, inflatable kayaks, whitewater canoes). These activities are designed to challenge the students both physically and mentally, as well as to let the students experience the natural world.

Students need to be aware that the Outdoor Education Program involves rigorous physical activities in an environment that is often uncomfortable and harsh. At times you will have to function when you are cold, wet, tired, and sore. Despite all safety precautions, there is also the possibility of injury and the natural environment of rivers and mountains makes injuries potentially serious. Whitewater boating and hiking are not spectator sports, and everyone must pull their own weight and contribute to the safety and proper functioning of the group.

The season consists of two after-school outings per week (Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:00 p.m. to approximately 7:00 p.m.), two weekend day trips, and two weekend overnight trips. This program will count for a physical education credit during season and as a team sport that meets the athletic requirement for freshmen. In order to receive credit, students must participate in one weekend day trip and one overnight trip, although participation in all of the weekend trips is strongly encouraged. Additionally, students may not miss more than two afternoon outings. Unexcused absences can result in dismissal from the program, in which case, students will be asked to return immediately to P.E. class. The number of participants in the program will be subject to transportation and equipment limitations. Make sure that you are able to commit to full participation in the program before joining.

There is a one-time charge of $100 to help offset the cost of transportation, campground fees, and equipment. Students typically may not be involved in any other sport during the season due to scheduling conflicts.

If you have questions, please contact Outdoor Education Director Mr. Kevin Ferdinand at kferdinand@moravianacademy.org.
