This summer, we will host the 2nd Moravian Academy Language Immersion Conference.  If you are involved in an immersion or dual language program as a principal, director, coordinator, or faculty member, if your school is considering immersion, or if you know of others who would like to learn more about immersion education, this conference is for you.  Join us for a day of conversations, professional learning opportunities, and fellowship as we continue the important work of language immersion education within our community of learners in the Lehigh Valley and beyond.

Keynote Speaker: Evette Rios

Evette Rios is a TV Host, Lifestyle Expert, Interior Designer, Cooking, Crafting, and Moravian Academy Parent

“Eso Se Hace” was not just our family’s mantra, it was our way of life. We made everything from scratch, from food to furniture. I don’t think this is uncommon in Latino families. Many of us remain a stone’s throw away from people who grow things, harvest things and make things with their own hands.

So, it is no surprise that I ended up making my life’s work about doing things myself. I couldn’t feel more passionate about it. I worked for years at some of New York City’s top interior design firms until I transitioned to television, where I was on Freestyle (a show that I hosted where there was literally NO budget. Honestly, Google it…) and In A Fix, where people would make over their neighbors house on a song and in a weekend. I have hosted shows on almost every lifestyle network out there. A&E, HGTV, TLC, FYI, you get the picture. Now, I am the host of a Facebook Watch show called Slice, where I invite a different celebrity chef into my kitchen each week.  I have felt incredibly grateful to be able to share what I know and love with so many people.

Workshop Leader: Ana Sainz de la Peña

The Science of Reading and the Bilingual Brain: Using research-based strategies aligned to the way bilingual brains learn to read and write.

Much has been written and debated about how to teach students to read and what constitutes scientific research that supports reading practices. This presentation will focus on the evidence-base Science of Reading (SOR) strategies to teach emergent bilinguals how to read in a second language and develop strong biliteracy skills.

Ana Sainz de la Peña is The CEO of Global Education Consulting Group, while also serving on the Education Board of Saint John Vianney Regional School and the CASA Executive Board. With more than 25 years of teaching experience in K-12 and higher education, Ana's experience includes being an Educational Consultant for the Pennsylvania Training and Technical Assistance Network (PaTTAN), Commissioner of the Governor’s Advisory Committee for Latino Affairs, and a member of the Advisory Board for Lehigh University College of Education, among other things.
