Theater and drama play an important role in all the grades in the Lower School. Beginning in prekindergarten, children learn poems, finger plays, and improvise in dramatic play scenarios. Throughout the year, each grade participates in curriculum-based performances incorporating song, dialog, and sometimes even art.
In fifth grade, a full-fledged musical production takes place in the fall. Any fifth grade student can audition and be a part of the cast. These musicals are a junior version of popular Broadway and Disney shows (such as: "Peter Pan, Jr.,” “The Little Mermaid, Jr.” “Schoolhouse Rock” "Beauty and the Beast, Jr.," and "Willy Wonka, Kids”). With limited rehearsal time, the cast performs for the public, their Lower School classmates, and during an Upper School assembly.
Other opportunities to perform take place when students create iMovies about various topics. The ability to not only star in a movie, but to also write and produce, builds confidence and leadership in our young students. Moravian Academy also holds an annual Moravian Academy Film Festival each spring that shows films created by students in all divisions.
