Our Upper School Instrumental Program includes four groups:
The Upper School Jazz Band is an ensemble in the tradition of the Big Band. This ensemble performs works by Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Thad Jones, as well as more recent jazz composers. Members of this ensemble will experience performing music in the swing, Latin, and rock styles, and will also be introduced to jazz improvisation. The Jazz Band performs throughout the school year at Coffeehouse, Chapels, and the annual Spring Concert.
The Upper School String Orchestra is comprised of violins, violas, cellos, and basses. This ensemble performs classical and modern compositions. The String Orchestra performs regularly at chapels and assemblies, as well as at the annual Spring Concert. From time to time, the String Orchestra may be augmented with members of the Wind Ensemble to create a Symphonic Orchestra. Select members of the String Orchestra may perform with the Moravian Academy String Ensemble and/or the Pit Orchestra.
The Upper School String Quartet is comprised of select members of the String Orchestra. This group will perform more challenging music which is typically from the string quartet idiom. The String Quartet performs regularly throughout the year at various concerts, Chapels, and other functions.
The Upper School Wind Ensemble is a musical group made up of woodwinds, brass, and percussion instruments. This group performs works written specifically for wind ensemble as well as adaptations of some orchestral works. The wind ensemble performs for Chapel and assemblies throughout the year and the annual Spring Concert in May. Select members may also perform with the Pit Orchestra for the annual winter musical.
