MAX: Winter 2024

MAX: Winter offers engaging after-school courses designed to maximize the winter season's wonders for students. Focused on creating a fun and educational environment, MAX: Winter offers a variety of activities, including sports, cooking, creative arts, and STEM projects. From snow-inspired crafts to animation adventures, these programs aim to ignite curiosity and foster a sense of community, ensuring that students make the most of the chilly months while building valuable skills and friendships.

Important Details


  • Courses will begin the week of January 15, 2024, with Monday classes beginning on January 22, 2024.
  • Course offerings will run weekly for 6 sessions. Class instructors will notify families of any changes to the schedule caused by holidays, weather, etc. 
  • Course sessions will be 1 hour long, 3:15 to 4:15 PM (unless otherwise noted).

Courses at the Historic Downtown Campus

24 Challenge Math

Students will enhance their mental math and fact fluency by playing 24 Challenge Math. They will learn skills and strategies to increase their speed, while having fun competing with friends. Students should plan to enroll in both the winter and spring session, because this group will compete in the regional 24 Challenge Math competition that will be held at the CIU 20 on May 7, 2024.

Story and Craft

Props and Set Design  
Learn to bring a stage to life! In this exciting after-school program, we will be creating backdrops and props for this year’s Lower School Player’s Spring production! We will be using a variety of hands on mixed media techniques, to prepare for the exciting culminating performance in April. This is a unique opportunity for students to create dynamic artwork that will take center stage! We hope you can join us!

French Cooking
Bonjour! If you're a foodie and want to learn to make a few classic French desserts and meals, then this is the elective for you! Students will learn to make chocolate mousse, chocolate fondue, omelettes and salad, quiche lorraine, and ratatouille. This is a nut-free program. Other allergies and dietary restrictions might not be accommodated for this class.  Please reach out to Emily Quinn with dietary questions. Hair must be pulled back and aprons are optional.

Bill Nye Adventures
Join Mr. Pomeroy and Bill Nye as they explore and discover our amazing world. Each themed class will explore a science concept with experimentation and a sense of humor, of course! Earth science, life science, and physical science will be studied in fun, interactive, and adventurous ways. Allow the “Bill Nye” in your child reveal itself with Mr. Pomeroy this spring!

SPORTS!
In the "SPORTS!" program, we will be playing a different sport or activity each week. The sports include soccer, handball, volleyball, basketball, etc. We will be practicing the skills and strategies of the games and activities while also working on sportsmanship. I hope you can join us!

Stop Motion Animation
Did you ever wonder how your favorite cartoons are made? Here is your chance to create your own animated film using the exciting stop motion method. Our program will culminate with the opportunity for our student animators to enter their original films into our annual Moravian Academy Film Festival.

littleBits: Electronic Adventures
littleBits takes Legos to the next level! With easy-to-use electronic building blocks, students can create a myriad of electronic gizmos. Their creations can be simple or complex, practical or fanciful, serious or lighthearted! Largely self-directed, students embark on an electronic adventure full of excitement and discovery as they develop their virtues of patience and perseverance through trial and error. Allow your child to take advantage of the Lower School’s littleBits Pro Library and liberate their minds with endless possibilities! Need more convincing? Google “TED Talks littleBits” and watch the 5:19 minute video. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to use the “Everything” App by Tinybop which replicates many of the littleBits capabilities in a virtual format on iPads.

Creativity Corner
If you have the creativity bug this program is for you! This is your opportunity to use our art room materials to create the original projects you been dreaming of. Each week students will be offered inspiration and guidance to help them bring their creative ideas to life.

Paper Quilling
In this program, students will get creative with the ancient art of paper quilling! Quilling is the art of manipulating and arranging small strips of colored paper into detailed designs. The strips of paper can be rolled, looped, twisted, and curled. Glue is used to secure the paper strips into place on thick paper or cardstock. Students will make cards and works of art worthy of being framed!

Melty Beads
In Melty Beads, students use their fine motor skills and imagination to make one-of-a-kind creations. Mrs. Stitt teaches them the technique of putting small plastic beads on a tray and then she uses an iron to melt the beads together. Most students take home at least one unique creation each class, while others choose to take on bigger projects that span multiple sessions. Either way, students are sure to use their time for meaningful creative expression!

Artistic Scientists in Action!

Get your hands messy exploring a combination of science and art experiments. Some things we will do: Shake up ice cream from scratch, test out different slime recipes, color mix volcanoes, and glue up fun crafts. Explorers will finish each day with a group game.
