<full>
On Wednesday, September 1, new and returning Moravian Academy students were greeted by their divisional directors, faculty, and staff as the school started its 269th year.

An all school chapel service at Central Moravian Church in Bethlehem was held on the morning of Thursday, September 2. Headmaster George N. King, Jr. opened the service with the welcoming remarks and he also delivered the Meditation. He shared some memorable accounts and observations from his past that made a profound impact on his life. Mr. King stated, “The key is to find and develop your own unique passion . . . what makes you tick . . . what is the passion that drives you and makes it worth it for you to get up every day. Each of you can and will make a difference in the world as you strive to be a decent human being while achieving excellence and leading productive, meaningful lives." In closing, Mr. King mentioned the names of a few Moravian Academy alumnae and alumni who have been inspired to achieve excellence.

The chapel service was followed by the annual flag raising ceremony at the School’s Church Street Campus, where students in Grade 1 through Grade 12, accompanied by Mr. King, faculty, and families, gathered to sing the school Alma Mater.

</full>

      <brief>Michael Brolly Exhibit Opens September 3rd</brief>
      <full>
Moravian Academy Upper School woodworking instructor and international wood-turning artist Michael Brolly will display a recent series of work plus collaborations with Ted Cooper at The Gallery at Home & Planet (25 East Third Street, Bethlehem, Pa). His exhibit will open on Friday, September 3, at a SouthSide Bethlehem First Friday event scheduled for 7:00–10:00 p.m. The exhibit will be open to the public through September 26.

Mr. Brolly’s unique and often humorous creations have been on display throughout the United States and all over the world. His furniture and sculpture creations feature a distinctive style of wood-turning that is visually stimulating and complex, with unmistakable precision.

His original show at The Gallery at Home & Planet features many of the works he created between 2007 and September 1, 2010, including “Waking History,” an installation piece recently shown at the Irish Arts Center in New York City.

Reflecting on his inspiration for “Waking History,” Mr. Brolly stated, “This work is an attempt to tug at the viewer’s subconscious and to hopefully start the questions about why men do the horrible things that they do to each other… for in the end, this is a very small planet and we are frail, weak creatures too often driven by our fears instead of our hopes. Our fears would have kept us in the caves of our prehistoric ancestors, but our hopes enabled us to put a man on the moon.”

Mr. Brolly has invented a unique way of working with wood that features an optical phenomenon in which made images seem to appear and disappear, depending upon the angle at which they are viewed. “Technically what I am doing is carving a bas relief into the wood and then removing the summerwood, which gives the eyes glimpses of what is there and allows the brain to recreate what it thinks was there,” said Mr. Brolly. “Metaphorically I am using the time signature of the wood, the annual growth rings, as a filter to mimic how the brain stores and retrieves memories.”

Mr. Brolly earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Kutztown University and a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Wood/Furniture Design from the University of Massachusetts.

You can explore pieces from Mr. Brolly's collection of wood turned objects, videos of his work, upcoming exhibits, news, and more at www.michaeljbrolly.com.
</full>
