“With the authority vested in me by the Bylaws of Moravian Academy…. I
declare that Mr. George N. King, Jr. shall be Headmaster of
Moravian Academy and in that role is charged with fulfilling the
mission of the school.”
With those words, on Friday October 12 and Saturday,
October 13, Chair of the Board of Trustees of Moravian Academy,
Dr. Steven Krawiec, formally proclaimed George N. King, Jr. as
Headmaster of Moravian Academy.
The two services,
planned by Installation Committee members Karen Sonier ‘78,
Douglas Woolley ‘87, Sharon Jones Zondag, Roxanne Amico, Tom
Bayliss, Ann Mindler, Allison Nicholson ‘96, Jarred Weaver and
Bob Zaiser, included music from the Upper School Chorale, the
Upper School String Ensemble, the Eighth grade Handbell Choir
and the Fifth Grade Chorus.
These groups were directed by Music Directors Rob Riker,
Patrice Kidd, Nate Diehl, and Ryan Harrington and accompanied by
Linda Himic and Nathan Shorb.
Student marshals, Jonathan Rau and Nishant Rastogi,
co-presidents of Student Council, led the processional of
Trustees, Faculty and Administrators, and Speakers. |

At both services, held in Central Moravian Church, The Rev. Dr. Douglas
W. Caldwell then welcomed everyone, noting the close ties between
Central Moravian Church and Moravian Academy.
David J. Devey, Headmaster of Moravian Academy from 1973-1988,
led the Liturgy for Education. The
Rev. Dr. Gordon L. Sommers presided over the formal installation asking
that all groups support Mr. King in his role and Dr. Steven Krawiec
presented the charge to Mr. King to uphold the mission of the school.
Prior to singing the Alma Mater, Wendy DeMarco Fuentes, President
of the Alumni Association, gave a brief history of the Alma Mater.
Mrs. Linda Wisser, Chapel Coordinator for the Lower and Middle
Schools and Mrs. Andrea Ecke, Chaplain at the Upper School, also took
part in the service.

Mr. King’s response to the charge spoke of this position as being a
fulfillment of a long time dream that he had as a boy growing up in
Louisville, Kentucky. He
stated he had always dreamed of attending Louisville Country Day School
(an independent school in Kentucky), and although that did not happen,
he has achieved that dream as an adult, by now serving as
Headmaster at Moravian Academy.
He invited all, both young and old, to dream.
Mr. King said that words could not adequately describe his
feelings on these two days, so, as he often does when words don’t
come, he concluded his response by picking up his sax and playing
“Come Sunday” by Duke Ellington.
Mr. Jeremy Sweet accompanied him on Friday and Mr. Skip Wilkins
on Saturday.

A reception at the Moravian Museum of Bethlehem followed the Saturday
service with music provided by Skip Wilkins and refreshments by Michelle
Sheridan and Ken Stein of Sodexho Food Services.
