Students Learn About Community Supporting Agriculture

January 31, 2008

Have you ever thought about what it would be like to know the farm that grows all of your vegetables? To meet the farmer and help at harvest time? Dominican Sister Miriam Therese McGillis never did, not until she and her fellow sisters inherited a farm in Blairstown , New Jersey in 1980. Genesis Farm has evolved over the years into a solar-powered, self-sustaining biodynamic farm that is supported by the local community. During her Chapel talk at the Upper School , Sister McGillis also described how students can come and live at the farm and participate in a program dedicated to learning how to live all aspects of life with a deeper connection to the natural world. Upper School Chaplain Mrs. Ecke was once a student at Genesis Farm, and credits that experience as a guide to her career path. Learn more about the bioregional approach to farming by visiting the Genesis Farm website.
