Moravian Academy Middle School works to foster the full potential of each student in "mind, body, and spirit." Its faculty is dedicated to working with the young adolescent in and out of the classroom. A faculty team works with students at each grade level. Each team is led by a grade advisor. Team meetings are held every week to review student progress, plan class activities and develop interdisciplinary instruction.

The Middle School believes that:

  • Learning is active and process-oriented.
  • Faculty should use varied methods of instruction to teach to the multiple intelligences in all of us.
  • Using alternative means of assessing learning is good teaching.
  • Middle school students need to develop self-discipline and responsibility.
  • There is basic goodness in each individual.
  • A sense of humor and being flexible are important.
  • Every student needs to develop a close relationship with a least one faculty member.
  • A strong extracurricular program is important for the development of the whole child.

To develop the whole student:

  • Each grade team plans service activities to involve the student in the larger community.
  • We have an active drama and music program. Over 74 students are involved in orchestra, another 92 are in the Middle School Chorus.
  • We encourage participation in chapel. Students serve as sacristans and chapel musicians perform every week.
  • The Student Forum, a representative body from all three grades, assists in planning all events.
  • The Middle School Reading Specialist works with teachers to foster each student's progress in academic subjects.

The year is organized by trimesters. A full narrative comment is sent home to parents three times a year. Faculty send comment sheets at other times to indicate areas needing improvement. Report cards with letter grades are issued at the end of each trimester.
