The lower school experience is:
- a field trip through an historic community
- an overnight environmental camping trip
- a tour of the museums in nearby metropolitan cities
- community service through a monthly food drive or a special service
such as Second
Grade Dessert Theater
- teachers sharing their passion for a particular subject, interest
or avocation with their students
- an academic program emphasizing the traditional skills of reading,
writing, critical thinking, problem
solving, communication and mathematics
- an introduction to the world of science, social studies and foreign
language
- instruction in art, music, library, and physical education
- the integration of computers and technology in the curriculum
- and a variety of after school electives such as the arts, cooking,
dance, sports, and drama.
Important components of the college preparatory program include:
- articulated student expectations
- small self-contained classrooms ranging from 16 to 18 students
- an experienced and knowledgeable faculty aware of students' learning
patterns
- an educational specialist devoted to aiding faculty with appropriate
learning strategies for their classrooms.
We communicate with the home through quarterly comments and progress reports,
twice-yearly conferences and, in some
grades, weekly student folders. Letter grades are
introduced in fifth grade. Student effort, study habits and the personal
development of values - such as responsibility, respect, cooperation and
honesty - are as important as subject content. At Moravian Academy, a
student is expected to "do one's best" and to participate. The enjoyment
of learning through discovery and "learning how to learn" are foundations
for successful life-long learning.
