What is expected of Moravian Academy students?
Our students are expected to work hard and to be decent human beings;
to treat others, as they would want to be treated. Respect and responsibility
are key words at Moravian Academy, both in terms of human relations and
property.
Do you have standardized testing?
We conduct standardized tests each year in the spring using the Comprehensive
Testing Program from the Educational Records Bureau for grades 1 through
5 in language arts and mathematics. A School Readiness Test is given to
kindergarten students in late May.
How is religion addressed at the Lower School?
All students attend chapel each Wednesday. Teachers often follow up
the chapel period with a discussion about the values presented during
the chapel talk.
How are parents involved in the school?
Parents may choose to participate in Parent Association activities,
volunteer to help with Sports Day and assist in the library and art room.
We host a classroom visitation and Lovefeast chapel service for fathers
in the fall and for mothers in the spring. Parents are also invited as
guest speakers to share their knowledge in an area being studied.
Are students involved in community service?
Community service is an important part of lower school life. Our projects
include a monthly food drive for the local Food Pantry. Each grade level
also participates in special service projects throughout the school year.
What is your class size?
Generally speaking our class sizes are as follows:
- Prek - 2 classes: one with 18 children and 2 teachers one with 10
children and 1 teacher
- Kindergarten: 2 classes: one with 28 children and 3 teachers, one
with 16 children and 2 teachers
- Grades 1 & 2: 3 classes with 16 children and 1 teacher in each class
- Grades 3, 4, 5: 3 classes with 18 children and 1 teacher in each class
How much homework is there?
Beginning in first grade there is about a ½ hour of homework each night.
The homework increases each year with about 1 ½ hours for fifth grade
students along with long term projects. However, the time it takes to
complete assignments depends on how quickly the student attends to his
or her tasks.
When do children start to wear uniforms?
Students begin to wear uniforms in first grade. We have formal uniforms
for chapel and certain field trips and informal uniforms for regular days.
Gym uniforms are worn starting in fourth grade.
When does school start?
School begins at 8:00 A.M. and ends at 3 P.M., except on Thursdays when
we have a 2:15 P.M. close for children in kindergarten through fifth grade.
Prekindergarten students are in school from 8:00 A.M. to 11:30 A.M. daily.
Do you have extended session after school and before school?
Yes. In preK we have a program in place where the children bring their
lunches and stay from 11:30 A.M. until 3 P.M. At that time they may join
the extended program for grades preK through fifth grade which runs from
3 P.M. to 6 P.M. We also have early morning supervision from 7:30 A.M.
to 8 A.M.
Do you have after school activities?
Yes. Four times per year we offer programs, grouped by grade level, that
meet once a week for a four- to six-week period. We also offer intramural
sports for fourth and fifth graders.
How would you describe the curriculum?
Moravian Academy is a college preparatory school that offers a challenging
and accelerated curriculum - one that is innovative and enriched with
field trips, special projects, technology, assemblies, art, music, physical
education, library, and foreign language, which is introduced as a subject
in fourth grade.
