The circus came to town at the
Lower School! Geometry, the
Ringmaster, paraded his top performers
at all grade levels.
Students were thrilled by the Angle
Family - acute, obtuse and right.
Perimeter and circumference circled the
center ring area while triangles,
squares, rectangles and trapezoids
angled for audience approval.
Included in our top billing are:
Prekindergarten
– The children enjoyed making and
eating geometric-shaped snacks.
Students made clown figures from various
shapes and sang geometry songs.
Mrs. Gerber as
‘Smarty Pants the Clown’ visited the
classroom. She identified shapes
and introduced geometric concepts
through magic.
Kindergarten
– Students made a circus car
with their fifth grade friends.
They ate snacks made out of
geometric shapes. Centers
were situated around the
classroom with tangrams,
tessellations and pentominoes.
First grade made
circus animals out of geometric shapes.
Second grade
assembled and hung geometric circus
figures on a tightrope underneath the
Big Top.
Third grade
created circus characters and acts
depicting life under the Big Top.
These were accompanied by alliterations.
Fourth grade
directed the circus train as it traveled
through the Lower School during the week
long event.
Fifth grade
students designed an 18-hole
mini golf course out of
geometric shapes. They
also found the area and
perimeter of squares, rectangles
and triangles.
INTERNATIONAL
and FINE ARTS WEEK
This year the Lower
School featured the little known
countries of western Europe. Each
grade studied a country and focused on
the geography, culture, history,
tourism, and little known facts about
the country. On Monday, March 3 the
students displayed their trifold boards
in the media room allowing their work to
be viewed by Lower School students and
teachers.
Monaco – First
Grade
The Grande Prix, one of the most
prestigious automobile races in
the world, is held annually in
the streets of Monaco. The first
graders held their Grande Prix
in a first grade classroom.
Later in the day they had a
visit from M.A. parent and race
car driver, Matt Connolly.
Luxembourg – Second
Grade
Students found many interesting facts
about Luxembourg through videos.
They learned that the main crop is
grapes. This small country makes a
lot of wine and all of the vineyards are
along a twenty-five mile stretch of the
Moselle River. Second graders held
a grape juice tasting event in the big
room. Also, each student
made a Luxembourg flag to embellish
their trifold board.
San Marino –
Third Grade
This country has a famous cake
– la torta di tre monti
(“cake of the three
mountains/towers”) –
something like a wafer cake
covered in chocolate.
Third graders created their own
version of this tasty dessert
with chocolate cake, vanilla ice
cream and berries. They
also created abstract paintings
in the style of Angelo
Boccardelli, and are currently
designing San Marino pottery in
art class.
Andorra – Fourth
Grade
Located between France and Spain
in the Pyrenees, Andorra has
some of the best skiing around.
This small country’s excellent
ski resorts claim over 7,600
acres of skiable terrain.
Fourth graders created an Andorran
ski slope complete with ski
lift!
Belgium – Fifth
Grade
Belgium is well known for its cuisine.
Try passing up a serving of Belgium
waffles or French fries - yes, they
originated in Belgium! And let’s
not forget that their chocolate is world
renowned! Fifth graders prepared
waffles with chocolate sauce and shared
them with others around the Lower
School.
