Guidelines for an Honors
Independent Study Project
Purpose:
An independent study project is an opportunity
for juniors and seniors to pursue a specific topic of
academic interest that is not available in the program of
study.
Process:
The student submits a word processed proposal
to the department chair explaining why the topic is of
interest, an outline of the material to be covered, the list
of weekly assignments and a description of the final
presentation. Also, it is the responsibility of the
student to find a teacher who will act as mentor for the
project who must sign the proposal. The deadline for
submission of the proposal is the last day of the first
quarter of that year. The project is to be completed
during the third quarter of the school year and a formal
presentation to the members of the Curriculum Committee will
be arranged in early April. The Committee will vote on
whether the student has met the standard for independent
study. Upon successful completion of the project, the
student will receive special honors recognition for
independent study on the official school transcript; there
is no academic credit given
Eligibility:
The student must achieve a grade in the
"A" range in the academic discipline at the end of
the previous year and at the end of the first quarter of the
current year. Juniors and seniors are eligible.
Note:
Independent Study does not take the place of
standard requirements; rather, it is an additional
obligation that the student elects to complete.
